Today, I was going through my files and I came around the incomplete Tumblr theme, I planned on releasing ages ago. At first I was thinking to myself to just leave it at that, but after playing around with it for a bit, it’s not that bad. RoboQuest vs OAuth

As some of you might know already, Tumblr has recently updated their API and started to use a new type of authorization method, OAuth 1.0a. It is a very solid and secure way of interacting with user’s Tumblr accounts, Twitter and other major websites uses this routine.

Currently RoboQuest has over a thousand bloggers successfully using it everyday. However, the application was built around the old Tumblr API authorization function. Which securely stores user information on my database. But it is not efficient and productive enough.

It would be a very smart move to use OAuth method for RoboQuest, it is secure and easy to sign up, two clicks and you’re done. However, this is where the trouble kicks in, current RoboQuest users have to sign up over again using the OAuth function to continue receiving weekly questions. Because new authorization system uses “tokens” instead of email and password to create a connection between a developer and Tumblr. Users don’t have to share anything personal and just deal with Tumblr.

This is tough one, loose hundreds of users or continue using the current, outdated method. At this moment, I am trying to figure out how to transfer over the current users to the new system. If I manage something, it would be awesome!

Past couple of days I’ve been playing around with Tumblr API, trying to get all of the tagged Tumblr posts. Currently Tumblr only allows users to search only for their own tagged posts through their API but not public.

It would be very neat feature to be able to pull all of the posts, just like how the current “Tracked Tags” function works. Tumblr should take a look at Twitter, by allowing people filter general postings with a keyword they have gained very big audience who integrated this gadget into their own websites. Because, currently Tumblr API is not widely used and has no greater purpose.

I decided to build a small and simple questionnaire application for tumbler users. Basic idea is to send random automated questions to tumblr blogs via tumblr API. Since tumblr does not yet have API access open to their “ask” feature, the questions are internally generated and stored in Message box for user approval and answer.

RoboQuest (that’s the application name) requires tumblr email address and password for access which is safely stored in RoboQuest database to send out questions on a weekly basis.

I hope you guys will like the questions and have fun blogging.

Update: RoboQuest is now listed on Tumblr’s Third-Party Apps directory.
